In 2010, the U.S Department of Education awarded a Race to the Top (RttT) grant to Ohio in an effort to improve some of the lowest achieving schools. Miami University’s Center for School-Based Mental Health Programs (MU) and CAYCI partnered to conduct site interviews with RttT school districts across the state. These interviews specifically explored the implementation on Family and Civic Engagement (FCE) model. The Ohio Department of Education developed this model to support schools and districts trying to enhance family-school-community partnerships and demonstrate improvement in student outcomes. By meeting with representatives of the school’s engagement committees (including school administrators, teachers, staff, parent representatives, and community organization members), MU and CAYCI explored what challenges schools experienced through FCE implementation, the strategies utilized for successful implementation, and how the FCE model was used to further develop partnerships in districts.
