From 2010 to 2014, CAYCI partnered with Cardinal Health to evaluate the Preventing the Abuse & Misuse of Prescription Drugs Grant Program. Cardinal Health developed this grant program to: 1) increase awareness of the prescription drug abuse issue; 2) increase knowledge of how to reduce access to prescription drugs, how to properly dispose old medications, and the consequences/dangers of misusing or abusing prescription drugs; and 3) increase willingness to openly discuss the issue of prescription drug abuse. Addressing prescription drug abuse and misuse was, and still is a, top priority given that research suggests almost one-third of individuals over the age of 12, who use drugs for the first time, engage in prescription drug abuse (National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2008).
The CAYCI team analyzed evaluation data provided by the program participants and administrators to measure the effectiveness of the grant. Individual site reports and Cardinal Health Evaluation Report were developed to provide insights on the strengths of the program and areas that might be targets for future improvement efforts. Evaluation tools were developed and are available for use by similar programs.
