CAYCI has provided empowerment-oriented evaluation support to After-School All-Star Ohio (ASAS-OH) since 2012. As an affiliate of a national afterschool program, ASAS-OH’s mission is to “provide comprehensive afterschool programs that keep children safe and help them succeed in school and life. CAYCI has used both outcome and process evaluation strategies to examine the extent to which ASAS-OH is successfully meeting this mission at its multiple sites across the state. Youth surveys have focused on documenting outcomes in the three impact areas that ASAS aims to impact: academics, youth development/enrichment, and health & fitness. Past data analyses have shown that youth who attended ASAS-OH consistently and frequently reported more favorable perceptions in some areas compared to youth who attended inconsistently and/or infrequently. Site observations, innovation tracking logs, focus group/interviews, and surveys have been used to evaluate the quality of the program model against established best practices in the areas of afterschool and youth development. Findings about strengths have been shared with ASAS-OH, along with specific recommendations for improvements, in evaluation reports written about the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years.
